Colors
I recommend that you choose a single color as the base color A. For the contrast color B, you can have fun with multiple colors and scrap yarn.
crochet hook
3 mm (US size C/2 or D/3, UK/Canada size 11) - or the hook size that results in a dense enough result.
gauge
As you are working in the round and with increases it is difficult to measure the exact gauge (which also changes a bit as you add additional spike stitch rows) so aim for a hook size that results in a nice and non-gaping result.
ConstruCtion
The potholders/bread cover are worked from the center and out. You make two layers that are joined to form the final piece, which may also include hanging loops and a knob.
